Best Character AI Alternatives: 8 Apps With Age Rules and Safety Notes
ยท Updated October 19, 2026
Part of our AI Chatbots & Assistants guide
Character.AI changed in late 2025, and a lot of people went looking for another app. Some wanted better memory or fewer filters. Others lost access because they are under 18.
That second group matters, because most "Character AI alternatives" are adult companion apps, and many popular lists send teens straight to them.
This guide does the opposite: every pick starts with its age rule, and the last section covers safer options for younger users and the parents who help them.
Our top three picks for adults are Nomi for long-term memory, Kindroid for customizing your companion and Replika as the best-known companion app.
Talkie, Chai and Poe offer variety and community characters, SillyTavern is for people who want to self-host, and ChatGPT with its teen protections is the safest option for creative role-play practice.
Age rules, prices and limits were checked in mid-October 2026, and several apps do not publish all of them clearly. For the bigger picture, see our complete guide to AI chatbots and assistants.
What Are Character AI Alternatives?
A Character AI alternative is another app where you chat with AI characters: fictional heroes, historical figures, original personalities or a companion that remembers you. People switch for four main reasons: age changes, content filters, short memory and long waits on busy free plans.
The biggest change came from Character.AI itself. In late November 2025, it ended open-ended chat for users under 18, starting in the US and expanding to other countries.
Teens kept access to features such as a feed and a new guided format called Stories, where you pick characters, a genre and a premise and then make plot choices.
The company said it acted after lawsuits and feedback from regulators, safety experts and parents, and the US Federal Trade Commission has opened an inquiry into several AI companies, including Character.AI.
A companion app is built for ongoing, personal conversation, often with memory, voice and a relationship-style theme. That is exactly why age and safety rules matter so much.
Quick Comparison: 8 Best Character AI Alternatives
Nomi is our top pick overall, followed by Kindroid and Replika. Here is how all 8 compare on use case, starting price and age rule. Age rules and prices were checked in October 2026 and several apps do not publish them clearly.

What Makes a Great Character AI Alternative?
A great alternative has strong characters and memory, but it also has clear age gating, honest content rules and a privacy policy you can read. A companion that remembers everything is only a good product if you know where that memory is stored.
We weighed five things: character quality and memory, age rules and safety tools, privacy and data use, clear content rules, and price.
Best Overall Character AI Alternatives (Adults Only)
1. Nomi: Best for long-term memory
Age rule. Australia's eSafety guide lists Nomi's minimum age as 18, and its App Store listing is rated 18+. This is an adults-only app.
Nomi is built around a single companion that you shape and that remembers your conversations over time.
What it does well. Memory is Nomi's main selling point. Reviewers describe it as known for long-term memory, and eSafety notes that key traits you set at creation cannot be changed afterward, though a companion can develop over time. It supports text, voice calls and images on paid plans.
Key features:
- One persistent companion that builds on past chats
- Voice calls on the paid plan
- Custom personality and backstory
- Free plan with limited daily messages
Pricing. A 2026 comparison lists Premium at about $15.99 a month, or about $99.99 a year. Another comparison says pricing is not clearly disclosed, so confirm in the app.
Best for: Adults who want a companion with a long memory.
The catch. It is a deeply personal product, so read its privacy policy before sharing sensitive details. We could not confirm how memory works from the vendor's own documentation.
2. Kindroid: Best for customizing a companion
Age rule. Kindroid is built for adults, but we could not confirm its exact age clause from independent sources, so check its terms before signing up.
Kindroid gives you detailed control over a companion's personality, backstory and appearance.
What it does well. Reviews describe deep personality and backstory customization with long-term memory on the paid plan. You can also build several companions, which suits people who want different characters for different jobs.
Key features:
- Detailed personality and backstory editor
- Long-term memory on paid plans
- Several companions per account
- Voice and image options
Pricing. The web Standard plan is listed at about $13.99 a month, or $14.99 through app stores, with Ultra at about $24.99 and Max at about $59.99. An August 2026 report said the free Lite plan would end on October 1 and be replaced by a small set of previews, so check what free access you get today.
Best for: Adults who want to design a character in detail.
The catch. Free access is shrinking, and most of the praise comes from affiliate-style review sites rather than independent testing.
3. Replika: Best-known companion app
Age rule. Replika says it is for adults, but Italy's data protection authority fined its maker, Luka Inc., about โฌ5 million in 2025 and reportedly found there was no working age verification. Treat it as adults-only and do not assume the checks are strong.
Replika is one of the longest-running AI companion apps, with a large user base and a friendly, supportive style.
What it does well. Replika is aimed at conversation, emotional support-style chat and light role-play, with an avatar you can customize. It is the easiest of the companion apps to understand if you have never used one.
Key features:
- Customizable avatar and personality
- Text and voice chat
- Free tier plus paid Pro and Ultra plans
- Mobile and web apps
Pricing. One pricing page lists Pro at about $19.99 a month, $69.99 a year or $299.99 for a lifetime plan, and Ultra at about $29.99 a month or $119.99 a year. Another source says Replika does not publish these prices on its site, so confirm in the app.
Best for: Adults who want the best-known, simplest companion app.
The catch. The regulator's privacy findings are a reason to read its policy carefully, and sources disagree on how adult content works on the paid plans.
Best for Variety and Community Characters
4. Talkie: Best for casual character variety
Age rule. The App Store lists Talkie as 18+ with content restrictions. A third-party blog reports a lower rating on Google Play and a minimum age of 16 in its terms, and we could not verify those, so treat the age rules as unclear and do not rely on it for younger users.
Talkie is a character chat app with a large library of fictional characters you can talk to.
What it does well. Talkie is easy to start and has a wide mix of characters, from anime-style figures to original personalities, plus voice and images. It suits quick, casual chats more than a long-term relationship with one companion.
Key features:
- Large library of community characters
- Voice replies and images
- Free to start with in-app purchases
- Mobile app
Pricing. The App Store lists Talkie Gems from $1.99 to $9.99 and a one-month option at $9.99. Android listings also mention ads.
Best for: Adults who like trying many different characters.
The catch. Age ratings differ by store, and in-app purchases and ads add up.
5. Chai: Best for quick community-made bots
Age rule. We could not confirm Chai's official age rating from independent sources. A parent-focused guide says it should only be used with supervision between 13 and 17, so check the store listing and terms yourself before anyone younger uses it.
Chai is a chat app built on bots made by its community, which means huge variety and uneven quality.
What it does well. You can open the app and start chatting with thousands of user-made bots in seconds. If you want quantity and novelty, it is one of the quickest ways to find a character you like.
Key features:
- Thousands of community-made bots
- Create and share your own bot
- Free tier with message limits
- Premium and Ultra plans
Pricing. Reviewers put Premium at about $14 a month and Ultra near $30, and some report weekly options from $9.99 to $19.99 that raise the yearly cost.
Best for: Adults who want lots of bots to try.
The catch. User sentiment is poor on mobile stores, with complaints about the paywall, hard message limits and filters, and bot quality varies widely.
6. Poe: Best for building your own bots on top AI models
Age rule. Poe is a general-purpose AI platform rather than a companion app. We could not confirm its minimum age from independent sources, so check its terms.
Poe lets you chat with many AI models in one place and create your own custom bots on top of them.
What it does well. If you want a character with your own instructions, Poe lets you write a bot prompt and choose which top model powers it. That is a flexible way to get a character that does what you want without relying on one company's filters.
Key features:
- Many AI models in one app
- Create custom bots with your own instructions
- Daily free points
- Paid plans with more monthly points
Pricing. Free users get a daily batch of points, reported at about 3,000, and one pricing page lists a paid plan at about $19.99 a month with 660,000 monthly points. Points are used per message, with the cost depending on the model, and sources disagree on the exact numbers.
Best for: People who want to build their own characters.
The catch. It is not a ready-made companion, and points run out faster on the most powerful models.
Best for Tinkerers and Safer Creative Use
7. SillyTavern: Best for tinkerers who self-host
Age rule. None built in. SillyTavern is software that you run yourself, and it does not include a model, so the age and content rules depend entirely on the model you connect and on you. It is not an app for children.
SillyTavern is a free, open-source chat interface for AI characters that runs on your own computer or server.
What it does well. Instead of one company's chatbot, SillyTavern connects to the AI of your choice, whether a cloud model or a local one.
Descriptions of it mention portable character cards, lore entries, group chats with several characters and detailed control over prompts and memory. Because the app runs on your own machine, chats and keys stay on your own infrastructure.
Key features:
- Character cards you can share and import
- Group chats with several characters
- Works with cloud AI services or local models
- Runs on your own computer
Pricing. The software is free. You pay for whatever model or API you connect to it, or nothing if you run a local model.
Best for: Technical users who want full control and privacy.
The catch. It takes setup, you are responsible for safety and for following the terms of any model you connect, and it is not beginner-friendly.
8. ChatGPT: Best for safer creative writing with parent controls
Age rule. OpenAI began a global rollout of ChatGPT for Teens on August 18, 2026, according to TechRepublic. It adds safeguards for ages 13 to 17 and optional controls for linked parents.
ChatGPT is not a companion app, but it is the most mainstream way to practice storytelling and role-play with safety features built for younger users.
What it does well. You can set up a story, play a character or ask ChatGPT to play one and keep writing together. For teens, the protections handle sexual or romantic role-play, graphic violence, risky challenges and unhealthy dieting content more cautiously. Linked parents can manage settings such as quiet hours, voice mode, image generation and saved memories.
Key features:
- Teen experience for ages 13 to 17
- Parental controls for linked accounts
- Strong creative writing and role-play
- Free plan available
Pricing. Free with limits. ChatGPT Plus costs about $20 a month.
Best for: Teens and families, with a parent involved.
The catch. OpenAI itself says the guardrails are not foolproof and can be bypassed, and ChatGPT does not require you to sign in or give your age to use it. Parents should stay involved.
How Should You Choose a Character AI Alternative?
Use this checklist before you download anything:
- Check the age rule first. Read the store rating and the terms. If you are under 18, skip the adult companion apps.
- Read the privacy policy. Find out what the app stores, whether chats are used to train AI and how to delete your data.
- Understand the filters. Know what the app allows and blocks before you invest time.
- Test memory on a free plan. Tell the character three facts, come back the next day and see what it remembers.
- Add up the real cost. Watch for weekly plans, in-app purchases and auto-renewals.
- Ask whether you need a companion at all. For storytelling, a general chatbot is often enough.

How We Evaluated These Apps
We built this list from app store listings, vendor pricing pages, regulator and news reports, Common Sense Media research and independent reviews, checked in mid-October 2026. Many companion-app reviews are affiliate lists, so we used them mainly for pricing and flagged where sources disagree.
We did not chat with every app, and we could not verify several age clauses, so we say so in each entry. Always check the current terms yourself.
Are AI companion apps safe for teens?
Common Sense Media says no. Its July 2025 report, based on a survey of 1,060 US teens aged 13 to 17, found that 72% had used an AI companion and 52% used one at least a few times a month.
Its risk assessment concluded these platforms can easily get around safety measures, and it advises that no one under 18 should use AI companions.
About a third of teen users said they had chosen to discuss serious matters with an AI instead of a person, and 34% had felt uncomfortable with something the bot said or did. Note that the survey's definition also included general assistants such as ChatGPT.
California's SB 243, which took effect January 1, 2026, now requires companion chatbot operators to follow safety rules, based on law-firm summaries. If you or someone you know is struggling, talk to a trusted adult or contact a local crisis line.
In the US, you can call or text 988.
Why did Character AI stop teens from chatting?
Character.AI said it acted after lawsuits, including a wrongful death suit over a 14-year-old's suicide, and after feedback from regulators, safety experts and parents.
It ended open-ended chat for users under 18 in late November 2025 and added Stories as a guided alternative, with a reported two-hour daily limit for teens. The lawsuits are allegations, not findings.
Under-18 users can still use features such as the feed, image tools and Stories.
Do AI companion apps keep your chats private?
Not necessarily. These apps store conversations to give the character a memory, and some use chats to improve their AI. Privacy rules vary by app, and we did not verify each one's data practices.
In 2025, Italy's data protection authority fined Replika's maker about โฌ5 million for GDPR violations that reportedly included weak legal grounds for processing data and unclear privacy notices.
Before you share anything personal, read the privacy policy, look for deletion options and avoid giving real names, addresses or health details. Our guide on whether AI chatbots are safe explains what never to share.
The Bottom Line
For adults, Nomi is the best pick for long-term memory, Kindroid for deep customization and Replika for the simplest, best-known companion. Talkie, Chai and Poe offer variety, and SillyTavern gives technical users full control.
For teens, the safest choice is a mainstream tool with parental controls, like ChatGPT, used with a parent involved, and the companion apps are not recommended under 18.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best free Character AI alternative?
For adults, the free plans at Nomi, Replika and Talkie let you try a companion at no cost, with limits. Poe offers daily free points to chat with many models, and SillyTavern is free if you run your own model. Free access changes often, and Kindroid's free plan was reported to be ending.
Is there a Character AI alternative for under-18 users?
Not among the companion apps, most of which are built for adults. Under-18 users can still use Character.AI's Stories and other features, and teens can use ChatGPT's teen experience with a linked parent for creative writing. Common Sense Media advises that no one under 18 should use AI companions.
Is Character AI safe for kids?
Character.AI ended open-ended chat for under-18 users in late November 2025 after lawsuits and regulator attention, and offers a structured Stories format instead. Parents should still check settings, talk with their kids and stay involved, since no AI filter is perfect.
Which AI companion app has the best memory?
Reviewers most often credit Nomi for long-term memory, and Kindroid and Character.AI's paid plan also advertise better memory. We could not verify any app's memory claims from vendor documentation, so test it yourself by telling the character a few facts and checking the next day.
Can AI companion apps read or sell my chats?
They store your chats, and company staff or systems may be able to access them, depending on the policy. Some apps may use conversations to improve their AI. We did not verify each app's rules, so read the privacy policy, avoid sharing sensitive details and delete your data if you leave.
