Counting the Days Between Two Dates the Right Way

The date difference between a start date and an end date is the count of days from one to the other. It sounds simple, but the answer changes depending on whether you count the last day and whether you want calendar days or only weekdays. Getting the rule right keeps deadlines, billing spans, and countdowns accurate.

Project managers count working days to a launch. Landlords and hotels count nights for billing. Students count days to an exam. Anyone planning a trip counts down to departure. Each of these is a date difference with a chosen counting rule.

Inclusive vs Exclusive, and Weekdays vs Calendar Days

An exclusive count measures the gap between the dates and does not count the end day, so it answers "how many nights" or "how many full days apart." An inclusive count adds the end day, which is what you want when both the first and last day count, such as a conference that runs Monday through Friday. That span is 4 days exclusive but 5 days inclusive.

Calendar days count every day, including weekends and holidays. Weekdays count only Monday through Friday, which matters for business deadlines and delivery windows. A two-week calendar span of 14 days is usually 10 weekdays.

How the Day Count Is Calculated

In words: take the later date minus the earlier date and count the whole days between them. Because the count follows the real calendar, every month uses its true length and every leap day is included, so the total is exact rather than an estimate based on 365 days. For an inclusive span, add one day to the result. For a years, months, and days breakdown, subtract the parts and borrow from months and years where a result goes negative.

Worked Example

You want the days from March 1, 2026 to July 5, 2026. March has 31 days, April 30, May 31, June 30, giving 122 days to the end of June, plus 5 in July, so the total from March 1 is 126 days, and 126 minus 1 gives a 125-day exclusive gap to July 5. As a breakdown, that is 4 months and 4 days. If you include the end day, the inclusive span is 126 days. 2026 is not a leap year, so no extra February day applies here.

Reference: Common Spans

SpanCalendar daysApprox. weekdays
1 week75
2 weeks1410
30 days30about 22
90 days90about 64
1 year365 (366 in a leap year)about 260

Benefits and Limits

The benefit is an exact count with weeks and a full breakdown, in any order you enter the dates, so a countdown or a billing span is precise. The limit is that a plain day count does not know your local holidays. If a deadline skips public holidays, subtract those separately from the weekday figure.

Common Mistakes

  • Forgetting to include the end day when both endpoints should count, which loses a day on inclusive spans.
  • Counting calendar days when a business deadline needs weekdays only.
  • Assuming 30 days per month, which drifts off across longer spans and leap years.

Tips

  • For a countdown, set today as the start and the event as the end date.
  • To find someone's age instead of a plain gap, use the age calculator.
  • To express a span as a share of a longer period, pair it with a percentage calculator.

People Also Ask

How do I count the number of days between two dates?

Subtract the earlier date from the later date and count the whole calendar days, including any leap day in the span. The tool above does this instantly.

Should I include the end day?

Include it when both the first and last day count, such as a multi-day event or a billing period. Leave it out when you only need the gap between the dates.

What is the difference between calendar days and business days?

Calendar days count every day including weekends, while business days count only Monday through Friday. A 14-calendar-day span is usually about 10 business days.

How many days are between two dates in different years?

The count crosses months and years automatically, adding the true length of each month and any leap days, so the total stays exact.

How do I count down to a future date?

Set today as the start date and the future day as the end date, and the tool shows the days remaining until your deadline or event.

Does the count include leap years?

Yes. Because it follows the real calendar, February 29 is added to any span that crosses a leap year.

Why does an inclusive count add one day?

An exclusive count measures the gap between two dates, while an inclusive count also counts the final day itself, so it is one day larger.
